scientific directors: Massimo Brignoni and Riccardo Varini

The Department of Economics, Science and Law of the University of the Republic of San Marino,
under of the art. 20 – paragraph 3 – of Law 25 April 2014, n. 67
visa the Statute of the University of San Marino
view the authorization of the University Council of 30 October 2019.
given that:
The Degree Course in Design of the University of the Republic of San Marino, in the person of the founder and director of the Degree Course prof. Gaddo Morpurgo and the Assistant Professors Massimo Brignoni and Riccardo Varini, has launched various basic and applied research projects of strategic design, service and product design in the context of plans for the enhancement of local material and immaterial resources and international cooperation. The scientific objectives were to verify the ways in which the discipline of design can contribute to new development strategies in local, national and international contexts or in emerging countries. Different methods of intervention have been tested and in particular some topics have been explored in depth: the definition of strategies for activating actions and players in local supply chains, methodologies for technology transfer in respect of local cultures and traditions and the role of design in processes of artisanal or industrial cultural development of small businesses.
The research conducted so far highlights the importance of training and the creation of internally generated critical knowledge as primary and basic issues of every evolutionary process and in the future it cannot fail to take into account both the methods of communication and interaction offered by the web and of the new scenarios induced by the productive, social and economic processes of globalisation.

RESEARCH GRANT
Equivalent to the CUN area: 08/C1 – Design and technological planning for architecture
Scientific Disciplinary Sector: ICAR/13
Title of the research: Strategic design with local communities and international cooperation
Scientific responsible for the research: Massimo Brignoni and Riccardo Varini
Duration: 12 months
Description and Objectives of the Research
The research program is part of a broader international debate which in recent decades has seen various universities and institutions engaged in the experimentation, classification and theorization of possible models of coaching and support for the development and transfer of knowledge and technology. The research involves the creation of a specific digital platform for the registration, promotion and dissemination of the work in its development phases. The primary objective of the research is to collect, classify and contextualize the most significant experiences of recent years in which the practice of Design has played a significant role in local development processes in the launch of production systems and services tailored to knowledge and local cultures, also in coordination with Third Sector realities, the definition of the cultural heritage to be valorised. This activity has the dual purpose of evaluating the state of the art and creating a network between institutional subjects, universities, international organizations operating in the world of international cooperation aimed at mutual understanding and collaboration.
Subsequently, we intend to consolidate a methodology of participatory intervention and a cooperative modality, with innovative characteristics, which potentially and possibly can be directly experimented even during the course of the research period and can then be applied n. times in different geographical, economic, social and political contexts. The aim is to organize an international conference to compare and verify the state of the art in the sector of study and vision of possible future objectives to then collect and order the documents and analysis and synthesis materials, both theoretical and applied, in a final publication . Other expected objectives are to progress and actively contribute to research in the specific research sector of the Community Design Research Unit, to offer local populations new design and production programming tools and to consolidate the skills of the research group in the scientific and academic.
Work program and specific project
The research fellow will alternate basic and applied research activities, with co-programming, organization and coordination activities. Unirsm Design has designed a Masters in strategic design with local communities, which can be launched during the year 2019-2020.
The research will aim to collect the most significant experiences of recent years in which the practice of Design has played a significant role in local development processes in the Mediterranean area and in Emerging Countries. The co-creation of a dedicated digital platform will be required, with market surveys, data collection, texts and images, the classification of studies with the drafting of typological files, participation in applied research activities during workshops implemented at the University of San Marino or in foreign contexts.
At the same time, the research fellow will take action to create a network between institutional subjects, universities, international bodies operating in the world of international cooperation aimed at mutual understanding and collaboration and at the possible organization and launch of the Master and the simultaneous organization of an international conference on the topics covered of this Call to be held at the headquarters of the Cdl in Design
In conclusion, the research fellow will hypothesize an intervention model or a cooperative method with innovative characteristics aimed at drafting a scientific contribution to be eventually included in a publication dedicated to the topic.
Methods of carrying out the research
The work will be carried out within a research group under the direct supervision and scientific care of the fellow responsible, prof. Massimo Brignoni and prof. Riccardo Varini, and mainly in the headquarters of the degree course in Design of the University of the Republic of San Marino and partner universities such as the Alma Mater University of Bologna, the IUAV University of Venice and the University of Florence .
The research fellow will follow a sequential planning of the work by communicating in writing and constantly informing the group managers of the progress of the research. All documentation will be kept strictly confidential to the research group until those in charge decide to make it public.
Methods and stages of verifications
The research fellow will produce a quarterly report on the activities carried out. These reports will be divided into chapters and will contain the following sections: activities carried out, research activities in progress, scientific results of the research, planning of activities for the following quarter. These reports will be submitted to the research grant managers who will evaluate their contents. At the end of the period allocated to the research grant, the grant holder will produce a final report of the activities carried out and an unpublished scientific contribution on the topics covered by the research.
