Description of the research project
The research project intends to study the open innovation mechanisms adopted by companies in order to pursue corporate sustainability objectives, declined in the three environmental, social and economic dimensions.
Research objectives
The United Nations Global Agenda for Sustainable Development (Agenda 2030) and the related Sustainable Development Goals are pushing companies to adopt a different perspective, aimed at pursuing sustainability objectives, declined in its three dimensions: social, environmental and economic. The concept of corporate sustainability, therefore, refers to the corporate regulations and policies that encourage the achievement of these objectives and has the aim, in the long term, of generating value by managing the available resources efficiently and, consequently, gaining an advantage competitive. In this regard, companies have historically resorted to closed innovation models, based on the use of internal company resources and skills, to acquire and maintain this advantage on the market. However, in a context characterized by a high volatility of demand and an ever-increasing complexity of the required products, the internal capabilities of the company are no longer sufficient, forcing companies to explore alternative models of innovation, such as open innovation ( open innovation). According to this new paradigm, companies are able to assimilate and exploit flows of knowledge coming from outside the corporate boundaries. The aim of the project is therefore to investigate the implications of the adoption of open innovation on corporate sustainability. Specifically, the project will contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the following closely interrelated fields: a) ontological (systemic) models for describing the functional and structural aspects of successful innovative firms; b) the role of open innovation processes in pursuing corporate sustainability objectives; c) business models that integrate open innovation and sustainability.
