given that:
- since the 2005/06 academic year, i.e. since its foundation, the Degree Course in Design of the University of the Republic of San Marino has been developing the three main missions of the University - training, research and relations with the territories - both in the areas of visual communication and in the areas of product design in the Italian peninsula but also in numerous other territories and continents
- issues relating to the valorisation of experimental research processes, strategic design and the development of processes and materials linked to innovative application scenarios and contexts are considered relevant in the context of basic and applied research concerning design;
- the professors in charge are also known internationally from a scientific and professional point of view for having developed skills and activities around these issues;
- the structured professors of the degree course in have followed systemic research and development projects through close relationships with companies and industries on the national and international territory. In particular, international activities have been developed annually with laboratories and workshops in collaboration with research and development bodies, local companies and industry confederations with the aim of activating or defining design corridors in the product area on several levels of innovation: processes, materials, ergonomic/functional products.

- thanks to the complementary and synergistic characteristics of the group of professors and structured researchers, processes and design methodologies have been developed applied to product and interaction design with a particular focus on experimentation and verification of body/artifact integration;

Description of the research project
The research program intends to deepen the main aspects of a systemic design approach oriented to the design of products, production processes and materials appropriate to the reference contexts. The verification, analysis and systematization of the literature will correspond, on the basis of acquired knowledge, to the elaboration of new project scenarios potentially applicable in concrete case studies. The research will focus on the identification of innovative and alternative models aimed at the sustainable development of local productions, territories and communities. A strategic and systemic design approach will make it possible to explore contexts holistically, identify tangible and intangible resources to define new production paradigms on a small local scale. The research will include the design of methodologies, approaches and intervention models in real case studies, their application and evaluation in real contexts.
Research objectives
The evolution of product design within the design processes has accentuated the characteristics linked to experimentation as a study methodology and practical comparison of contemporary technologies with consolidated knowledge and practices. In the last two decades, digital manufacturing laboratories have become bearers of new experimental design and verification tools.
In the contemporary panorama, new opportunities for research development are opening up to support local communities in their visions of a sustainable future, especially from an environmental point of view. For example when the projects act as activators and mediators between contemporary digital technologies, local material cultures and previous knowledge linked to traditional methods and manufacturing processes.
The analysis of case studies and product trials in university laboratories will support the development of scientific research, highlighting how knowledge matches can stimulate new practices and virtuous design processes.
Work program and specific project
The fellowship will alternate basic research and applied research activities, with activities of organization, support and coordination in the work context which also takes care of integrating research activities with training and relationship activities with the reference territories .
The work program is divided into several activities developed in parallel during the period of service:
- Analysis and cataloging of the experimental research carried out by the laboratory courses of the research group.
- Analysis of the state of the art at an international level with respect to contemporary methodologies and research fronts of systemic design.
- Theoretical, experimental and prototype development of design corridors capable of uniting the identified research fronts and any entrepreneurial realities in the area.
- Support in the prototyping activities of the design research group.
- Organization and support for the preparation of research results in specific scientific publications.
- Continuous bi-weekly update of the communication of the activities, on the platforms for sharing and disseminating results, with tools such as the research website, publications and archives.
Methods of carrying out the research
The work will be conducted under the direct supervision of the grant managers, prof. Riccardo Varini, Massimo Brignoni, Giorgio Dall'Osso, and mainly in the seat of the Degree Courses in Design, Monastery of Santa Chiara. All documentation will be kept strictly confidential to the research group until those in charge decide to make it public. During the year, the production of scientific papers and the sharing of the results achieved by the research are foreseen, as well as checks on the progress of the project.
