The Library of Historical Studies was established with the establishment of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici (Higher School of Historical Studies), founded in 1989, and presided over by illustrious figures in Italian culture: Aldo Schiavone and Luciano Canfora. It holds approximately one hundred thousand volumes and around one hundred subscriptions to historical journals. It includes some particularly valuable sections, including the Ruggiero Romano Collection and recent significant donations from the Alberto Ronchey Collection, the Corrado Vivanti Collection, the Fernand Braudel Collection, the Adriano Prosperi Collection, the Carlo Fusaro Collection, the Ercole Sori Collection, the Silvio Panciera Collection, the Claudio Finzi Collection, the Sergio Borelli Collection, the Nicola Tranfaglia Collection, and the Stefano Zamagni Collection. Added to these funds are the volumes donated by institutions, teachers and friends of the Higher School of Historical Studies, such as Eric Hobsbawm, Renato Zangheri, Mirella Bartolotti, Vittor Ivo Comparato, Alberto Caracciolo, Pier Paolo Tempesta, the Lelio and Lisli Basso Foundation, the Feltrinelli Foundation, the Vienna Academy of Sciences, the San Marino-Japan Association, Luigi Morganti, Pier Paolo Guardigli, Oreste Morganti, Gianfranco Berardi, Federicomaria Muccioli, Federico Santangelo, and Patrizia Dogliani.
