Following the model of other European centers of Local History and Landegeschichte, the San Marino Center for Historical Studies deals with the history of the territory, with reference to the entire area that slopes down from Montefeltro towards the sea, within which, in ancient times, they were defined the first relationships between human nuclei and the future territory of the Republic of San Marino. The center was founded in 1992 by Sergio Anselmi (†), well-known scholar and professor of economic history at the Polytechnic University of Marche (Ancona), and is now directed by Stefano Pivato, former full professor of contemporary history at the University of Urbino. The Center benefits from a scientific council which usually meets twice a year and is made up of San Marino scholars and professors from other Italian universities. It is the task of the council to plan the Centre's activity and to approve, on a scientific level, the results of individual research.
The main activity of the Center consists in stipulating research agreements and publishing the related results in its two series: “Quaderni” and “Tools and Documents”.
