Department of History and Law develops research, training and third mission programs. It is characterized as a center for advanced research and studies, destined to become one of the main international centers in the field of historical and legal investigation. As regards the field of historical education, it began with PhD in Historical Studies, created in 1989, and has been, since then, a school of excellence as regards post-graduate training dedicated to historical studies in a transversal (from ancient history to contemporary history) and interdisciplinary perspective, in which not only historians are involved , but teachers of the most varied training in the field of humanistic studies and human sciences (sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, economists, jurists, men of letters, etc.).
Regarding the sector of legal studiesi, it has been equally active since the creation of the University and was born with the aim of promoting legal culture and spreading knowledge of the San Marino legal system and institutions; he dealt with training, professional updating, international scientific comparison; has developed the systematic and particular collection of the laws of the Republic by publishing the various volumes of San Marino civil, criminal, administrative jurisprudence and other works of legal doctrine
