The Department of History and Law carries out research, teaching, and third mission activities. It is conceived as a center for advanced research and studies, with the aim of becoming one of the leading international centers in the fields of historical and legal inquiry. With regard to historical studies, training activities began with the PhD in Historical Studies, established in 1989. Since then, the program has represented a center of excellence for postgraduate education, adopting both a broad chronological perspective — ranging from ancient to contemporary history — and an interdisciplinary approach. The program involves not only historians, but also scholars from a wide range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, including sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, economists, legal scholars, and literary experts.
The field of legal studies has been equally active since the foundation of the University. It was established with the aim of promoting legal culture and disseminating knowledge of the legal system and institutions of the Republic of San Marino. Its activities include education, professional development, and international scientific exchange. The Department has also compiled systematic and specialized collections of the Republic’s laws, publishing several volumes of San Marino case law (civil, criminal, and administrative), as well as other works of legal scholarship.
