In just a few years, digital technologies have transformed the social organization of our time with incredible speed and with hardly predictable effects. From a communication tool, the Internet has turned into a prerequisite for individual action, the main platform on which to build interpersonal relationships, work and the provision of services, commerce and content: it has become the environment in which culture is born and a way of living is formed the world and to organize it and it is necessary to become aware that this environment is not a separate place, a parallel reality but rather the space in which an increasingly important part of real life unfolds. Real and virtual can no longer be interpreted as two distinct worlds where each is free to assume a different identity depending on the circumstance, but now represent territories integrated by a constant and increasingly pervasive "connectivity".
Now, the greatest challenge we have to face is that of being able to accompany society in a process of elaboration of the measures, culture and sensitivity necessary to face the new problems posed by technological development. We need to find new ways to protect the person in his uniqueness between physical life and digital life, trying to combine freedom and responsibility in the largest public space of our time. These are fundamental values that must first of all be transmitted to young people, "digital natives", who more than others possess the ability to access and exploit the opportunities offered by the digital society in an increasingly dynamic way.
The School once again plays a leading role in this educational challenge and it is up to it to teach young people how to constructively deal with the new forms of expression offered by the Net in a new form of active and democratic citizenship that also pervades the virtual sphere in order to promote conscious management of all aspects of one's life that are also delivered to the online world. Educating aware "virtual citizens", active users of the Internet and of modern technologies is the main task of the new education, as well as in the Recommendation 2006/962/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2006. It outlines a reference framework in which they identify and define the key competencies necessary for personal fulfillment and development, active citizenship, social inclusion and employment in a knowledge society. Among them, the digital skills, followed by thelearning to learn and by social and civic skills for (other key skill) develop a spirit of initiative and entrepreneurshipEach of these "skills" can contribute to a positive life in the knowledge society by fostering critical thinking, creativity, initiative, problem-solving skills, risk assessment, decision-making, and the ability to constructively manage emotions in a space much broader than that limited to school, that of lifelong learning.
The task of the School and of the Society is to catch up, dealing with a new dimension of the real that has incorporated the virtual with its potential and its risks as in every area of human life. The Department of Human Sciences thanks to the collaboration with the San Marino Middle School has decided to take on this challenge by promoting a interdisciplinary project, introduced by a panel discussion open to all citizens, on the conscious use of social networks as a tool to contribute favorably to the growth of the individual, to a good construction of one's individual identity and, at the same time, to the enhancement of the collective identity. Aspects which, if promoted, can consequently encourage citizens to be more sensitive to issues such as inclusion and equal opportunities or to the "need to safeguard the reasons of the individual while educating him to recognize himself in the social context".
