"The Memory of Migrations: Narration and Museumization" is the title of the Lectio Magistralis scheduled for Wednesday, May 3, for the seventh edition of "Lectures on Memory," an annual event organized by the Center for Studies on Memory at the University of the Republic of San Marino at the Ancient Monastery of Santa Chiara, located in the historic center of San Marino.
The speaker will be Viviana Gravano, historian and contemporary art curator, as well as professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, who will provide a preview of her talk: "Historical emigration," she explains, "has marked and continues to mark the identity of not only individual European nations, but the very nature of a possible definition of the concept of 'Europe.'" On the other hand, Europe's colonial past, which clearly contributed to shaping the national identities of various colonizing countries, resurfaces today in relations with countries that generate migratory flows toward the European continent. The lecture aims to address methodological questions related to the possible narrative, particularly visual and performative, of the memory of Italy's historical emigration, including through the analysis of museum experiences related to this now widespread phenomenon. It also seeks to understand whether and how these narratives can intersect with the current state of new emigrations underway and, essentially, new immigrations."
In addition to Gravano, the initiative will feature speakers Corrado Petrocelli, Rector of the University; Patrizia Violi, director of the Center for Memory Studies at the Department of Human Sciences; and Marco Podeschi, Secretary of State for Education.
The event, open to the public and sponsored by the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture, is scheduled for 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
