Stretch the Edge -Design Driven Processes for Reactivating Small Walled Towns and Inland Areas

The event intends to investigate how the discipline of design can be a useful tool for the reactivation of those territories located in inland areas, enclosed by natural barriers or artificial fortifications.

Territories which, due to their size, morphology, environmental or anthropic characteristics, sometimes present considerable criticalities, but which, precisely because of their characterization, which is sometimes unique, differ from one another thanks to a strong identity which makes them socially, economically and environmentally attractive.
The values of uniqueness and identity represent concrete opportunities for natural, urban and rural development and as such they must be improved, re-evaluated, reworked and systematized in future processes of community repopulation and settlement, precisely with the aim of contributing to making the same territories multi-species and interspecies ecosystems, tangible places of sustainable life.

16 international case studies will be presented in which design is the central element for reactivation and regeneration, divided into three sessions moderated by Raffaella Fagnoni, Full Professor at the Iuav University of Venice, Daniele Fanzini, Full Professor at the Milan Polytechnic and Claudio Gambardella, full professor at the Luigi Vanvitelli University of Campania.

The following will intervene at the opening of the sessions as Keynote Speaker: Helena Casanova, architect and author of the book “Public Space Acupuncture”; Agostino Riitano, Cultural Manager and current director of Pesaro Italian Capital of Culture 2024 and Pablo Sendra, Architect, Associate Professor at the Bartlett School of Planning and author, together with Richard Sennett, of the book: “Designing disorder. Ideas for the city of the XNUMXst century".

The presentation of the results of the research undertaken in 2022 is also planned: a mapping of 150 national and international case studies expressed through frameworks and data visualizations.
The event will end with work tables open to the public which will focus on the following topics: reactivation strategies, community involvement and territories in the network.
