Institute of Mediterranean Studies – Crete

The University of San Marino, together with the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (Rethymno, Crete) and the University of Pisa, organizes a ten-day summer school on Mediterranean cinematographic culture.

The aim of the Summer School in Mediterranean Film Culture is to introduce participants to Mediterranean film culture in its various aspects, through teaching, class discussions and visits to places that have become famous film sets.

The lessons will cover the three main European Mediterranean countries: France, Greece and Italy. Ample space will also be dedicated to the exploration of transnational relations with other Mediterranean countries. Classes will explore the work of major directors, film genres and stars, issues of national identity, sexuality and gender, relationships between cinema and history, the film industry, production and co-production, filming locations and representation of aspects of everyday life such as food and popular entertainment.

The Summer School will take place from 1 to 10 July 2024 at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (IMS), located in the historic center of Rethymno, Crete, and is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in any field, with priority given to students of humanities subjects, but also welcomes anyone interested in the topic. The number of places available is limited (15) in order to offer an intensive learning experience to all participants.

The deadline for applications is March 10, via the website Summer School.
