40 years after John Cage's The Train and 20 years after the last edition of the radio festival L'Arte dell'Ascolto, San Marino hosts a symposium - workshop dedicated to Radio Art.
John Cage's experience also reached Rimini and Ravenna in June 1978. Forty years later, we can listen to the testimonies of those who were there and reflect on this epochal project. John Cage's train (among other things) envisioned a traveling sound production studio reminiscent of its cinematic counterpart: Djiga Vertov's train and his Kinoglaz. The Art of Listening (LADA) was the festival that during the 40s brought some of the most innovative international artists to Italy—specifically, to Rimini and San Marino.
Cage's traveling studio opens a reflection on the importance of sound and music research within radio. This is, in short, one aspect of Usmaradio's daily work. First, it explores the history of the RAI Musical Phonology Studio in Milan, founded in 1955 by Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna and active until 1983.
The School of Radio
Taking place at the Antico Monastero Santa Chiara, the Teatro Titano, and Usmaradio, the event will include round tables, workshops, sound installations and exhibitions, live radio broadcasts, and performances.
A resounding occupation – also through FM microbroadcasting – of such unique and varied spaces to create an immersive environment that will welcome participants for three days.
Sound installations are located in various spaces of the Ancient Monastery of Santa Chiara (particularly in the nuns' cells) and a photographic installation in the public space will be visible for an entire month.
On Friday, March 9th, the Mokadelic group (composer of the music for the TV series Gomorrah) will open the event with a concert at the Teatro Titano.
The Cagetown performance on Saturday 10 March will be featured in a special episode of Ö1 Radiokunst – Kunstradio dedicated to the project, which will be broadcast this spring.
Radio San Marino will conduct a series of interviews with guests throughout the radio program during the symposium.
The School of Radio is broadcast live on Usmaradio.
The symposium will present the School of Radiophony, which now finds a home, together with Usmaradio, at the University of the Republic of San Marino. This school offers workshops, work sessions, meetings, radio performances, radio as an exhibition and museum space, and field radio. A school designed to train artists, technicians, and scholars. The intersection of radio and the web is a cornerstone of the project. It's important to note how rapid technological innovation has led to the progressive portability, even pocketability, of the radio studio (field radio). We want to work together to build on this mobility.
