The recognition goes to the Titano Civil Engineering Degree Course, together with the Marche Polytechnic
A scientific article on the regeneration of bituminous conglomerate, used for road paving, earned the Civil Engineering Degree Course of the University of the Republic of San Marino, in collaboration with the Marche Polytechnic, the “Michael T. Long Award 2017" as "Best Innovative Idea" during the conference "International Congress on Transport Infrastructure and Systems", recently held in Rome and focused on emerging technologies for eco-sustainable mobility.
During the event organized in the Italian capital, researchers and engineers involved in transport and road infrastructure, coming from over 50 countries, were involved in over one hundred presentations in parallel sessions and workshops.
"The article describes the design of a bituminous conglomerate containing large quantities of milled material from the demolition of road pavements - explains Andrea Grilli, a researcher at the University of San Marino - the old bitumen was regenerated through the use of a specific bio-additive , obtained from the distillation of pine wood waste used for the production of paper. The effectiveness of the product has been tested both in the laboratory and in a test field on the A14 motorway. These works, also appreciated at an international level, have allowed, within the framework of the agreement between the University and the Autonomous State Authority for Public Works, the drafting of a new Special Tender Specifications for extraordinary maintenance works of the Titan road network. It is a project absolutely in step with the times, both from the point of view of technology and eco-sustainability”.
