Learning objectives

Grammar is not studied just for its own sake, but with the express purpose of applying it to the relevant language. Students are asked to research a presentation to be given in English on a topic of their choice to take to the final exam. At the end of the course students will be able to express their ideas through spoken and written language. They will also be able to immediately understand the meaning of speech in English, translate texts, and deal with topics related to engineering.

Course content

The course plans to teach the English language with emphasis on the specific language of the civil engineering sector. The approach is highly interactive, using sector didactic material, readings in the language and also working on the translation of texts to talk about civil engineering with the aim of making the study of English as practical as possible, giving an input of technical language and at the same time stimulating a correct approach to self-study in the language.

Teaching methods:
Lectures and interactive lessons in the classroom.

Prerequisites

An entrance test establishes the level of the students in the classroom. Ideally we try to work on a minimum level of Pre-Intermediate. Students with the lowest level are required to work hard on their level of grammar with the aids of software in the computer classroom.

Bibliography

  • Course readings and material for the course are posted on the open learning platform 'Docebo'.
  • Students should also bring a grammar book and dictionary of their choice to lessons such as:
  • Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary (or anything similar)
  • English Grammar in Use Raymond Murphy CUP

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam will consist of an oral exam which will essentially focus on the presentation of a project that has been studied during the year and a translation test of some sentences from English into Italian and Italian into English.
