General principles of assessment and characterization of excavated earth and rocks and demolition materials for economically and environmentally sustainable reuse in the structures and infrastructures of the San Marino territory

The project represents the response to the need for a radical change in production processes aimed at the construction sector in favor of eco-sustainable techniques and a circular economy in which waste becomes resources again and actual waste is reduced to a minimum. This process turns out to be essential to create a system increasingly oriented towards the ecological transition, which aims to safeguard the planet. As part of this project which combines skills from various sectors, specific aspects of the San Marino territory will be analyzed and evaluated with the aim of optimizing the recovery of both demolition materials and excavated earth and rocks and of directing future generations towards a sustainable built environment and initiate a system based on the circular economy. The dissemination of the results will take place through seminars, workshops, technical meetings and lessons.

Reuse of demolition materials and excavated earth

The project consists of an interdisciplinary study involving three main Research Units focused respectively on specific skills in the sector of road infrastructure, geotechnics and construction science. The research project is focused on the reuse of demolition materials and excavated earth for the circular economy of road infrastructure construction and maintenance works, evaluating its applicability in the Republic of San Marino. In particular, the main objective of the project is to identify the possible methods for the differentiated reuse within the construction or maintenance processes of road infrastructures of the waste materials deriving from construction and demolition works and of the earth and rocks specifically excavated for the San Marino context, supported by appropriate modelling. The aspects of main impact on innovation, economic and industrial growth as well as on the environment and society include the recovery of demolition materials, earth and rocks from excavations otherwise destined for landfill; the protection of first-use natural resources; reducing emissions for the production of building materials; the definition of healthier and safer working environments thanks to the reduction of operating temperatures; reducing the impact of construction sites on the social fabric; the reduction of production costs; the possibility of developing a virtuous internal production chain independent of production plants abroad. The dissemination of the results will take place through seminars, workshops, technical meetings and lessons.
