AASS and the University of San Marino join forces to ensure the sustainable and safe use of the region's water resources.

A research project to identify the measures needed to ensure the sustainable and safe use of Mount Titan's water resources is the focus of an agreement signed last Tuesday, October 27, by the Autonomous State Company for Public Services and the University of the Republic of San Marino.

The two-year agreement involves the University of San Marino's Civil Engineering degree program, which will be the focus of an activity that will particularly involve Stefano Orlandini, professor of Hydraulic and Maritime Constructions and Hydrology, who works both on San Marino and at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
"Optimal management of water resources," explains Angelo Marcello Tarantino, director of the degree program, "is not only important for ensuring environmental quality, with obvious implications for public health, but also represents a significant opportunity for generating revenue and reducing the adverse impact of floods and landslides on public budgets. While the future poses significant challenges, especially related to demographic, land-use, and climate change, we now have new survey, monitoring, and mathematical modeling tools to overcome these challenges."
The academic also notes that within the project, already underway, "analyses of precipitation and atmospheric evaporative stress observed over the last hundred years have been developed, and new flow monitoring instruments have been installed by the AASS, which will be essential to reliably closing the Republic's hydrological balance. The University of San Marino," he comments, "is confident it can make a valuable contribution to improving water resource management and reducing flood risk on Mount Titan, transferring the knowledge acquired over years of research to the responsible bodies and students."
"It is important to emphasize that since the issuance of Regulation No. 1/2019 on the Integrated Water Service, AASS has fully assumed its management role," states Raoul Chiaruzzi, director of the company. "Another key aspect is the opportunity to create, thanks to the scientific and data analysis approach initiated through this collaboration, the necessary basis for the construction and compilation of the Sustainable Development Indicator of the UN 2030 Agenda, especially for the indicators of Goal 6, relating to water."
The agreement was signed at the Rector's Office by Renzino Gobbi, President of AASS, Stefano Orlandini, scientific director of the project, and Rector Corrado Petrocelli.
