Analysis of the condition of the Titano's roads by a student at the University of San Marino

Fifty sections of the San Marino road network were analyzed to verify their conditions and to establish, according to the priority identified, the order in which some maintenance interventions will be implemented, necessary to bring them back to high standards. The activity, which involved 60 kilometers of roads from September 2016 to March 2017, is at the center of the thesis awarded today to Rimini student Laura Belmonte with her master's degree in Civil Engineering at the University of the Republic of San Marino. Of the sections analysed, ten showed pavement judged to be between excellent and good, 26 recorded a sufficient state, 14 are in critical condition and will therefore be involved in maintenance operations as a priority. Parameters such as the presence of cracks, undulations, settlements, holes and depressions were considered in the study.

Dealing with the analysis of road instability, the 25-year-old student assisted the technicians of the Autonomous State Company for Public Works in the surveys, participating in an activity that led to the identification of the necessary interventions in each area to restore the asphalt under the best conditions. An academic activity, therefore, which finds immediate application in the road maintenance operations which are currently involving the Company within the territory of the republic.

The degree thesis, entitled "Survey of instability and assessment of the condition of the road surfaces of the San Marino road network", had the professor Andrea Grilli as supervisor and recorded the contribution of the staff of the Autonomous State Company for Public Works and of the Territorial Information System of the San Marino Public Administration. Together with Belmonte, three other students graduated today in Civil Engineering: Alice Corbelli completed the three-year course of study, Michele Garavini and Nicolas Lazzarini the master's.
