Architectural barriers: The University of San Marino has developed a tool to prioritize interventions for 188 public buildings in San Marino.

An analysis method already tested on five public buildings in San Marino has been developed by the University of the Republic of San Marino to determine the order in which to intervene to remove architectural barriers, thus facilitating access for the disabled. In light of the results, the Secretariat of State for Territory has requested that the University of San Marino extend the activity to 188 public buildings.

The initiative, organized by the Civil Engineering degree program, saw San Marino student Riccardo Gasperoni undertake a 250-hour internship at the Autonomous State Agency for Public Works in recent months. During this internship, he developed a method for preparing a multi-year intervention plan. His work, coordinated by professor Michele Bacciocchi, involved activities such as site inspections, surveys, and data processing, with the goal of providing an objective, practical, and functional tool. The method, in fact, allows for the creation of a ranking list of buildings in order of priority and has already been tested on five structures: the Land Registry Technical Office on Via Piana, the building in Borgo Maggiore housing the Health Center and the Gendarmerie Brigade, the State Library in Palazzo Valloni, the State Museum, and the gymnasium of the Fonte dell'Ovo Middle School.

"We are faced with a new way of addressing the problem of architectural barriers for San Marino and for local administrations in general," explains Bacciocchi, a graduate student in Civil Engineering. "The goal of creating a single tool consisting of a series of interconnected work phases has been achieved and has proven successful. The administration now has a tool that can assist in the phases of surveying, data collection, archiving, data processing, and comparison between buildings, all based on objective criteria. The objectivity of the parameters contained in this project," concludes the professor, "is the key element that should guide decisions, providing a comprehensive picture of the current state of San Marino's public buildings."

"This initiative," commented the Rector of the University of San Marino, Corrado Petrocelli, "brings prestige to our institution and to the sector headed by Angelo Marcello Tarantino, demonstrating how the University of San Marino is increasingly positioning itself as a point of reference for the local area and the San Marino community."
