From historians such as Canfora, Tuccari and Butti de Lima a volume published by the publishing house Il Mulino
What are the arguments and theories with which war, over the centuries, has been justified and understood? To offer a perspective to this question, the University of the Republic of San Marino has developed a 336-page book published by the publishing house Il Mulino and created in the wake of a conference on the topic organized by the University of San Marino in 2023, held on Titan together with the Italian Association of History of Political Thought.
The volume has nineteen chapters, each written by a different scholar, dedicated to the "thought of authors who in this field can certainly be considered classics", as we read in the preface. It begins with the ancient world with essays on Thucydides, Plato and Cicero, signed in order by Luciano Canfora, Paolo Butti de Lima and Fausto Pagnotta. Then space is given to the medieval and modern ages, passing through figures such as Bernardo di Chiaravalle and Machiavelli. Next comes the contemporary age. Finally, seven essays on the twentieth century are proposed.
The book, as specified in the introduction, focuses "on the individual authors and their relationship with their own time, entrusting the relevant essays to specialists who know them well and have studied them for a long time, in order to offer readers a significant and original cross-section of the representations and cultures of war in the Western world from antiquity to the present day".
The work, entitled “Forme e culture della guerra”, was edited by Butti de Lima together with Francesco Tuccari for the University of San Marino. It represents the thirteenth volume of the “Critica storica” series, coordinated by the Department of History and Law of the University together with the publishing house Il Mulino.
The book is available in paperback (in bookstores or online) and digital (downloadable online). It is also possible to consult it for free online at the link below.
