"Culture of Making": The Universities of San Marino and Basel Join Forces on a Design Research Project

Questioning the technological processes required to produce an object, redefining its functions, and interacting with different design cultures. These are the main activities at the heart of the international experimental training and research project "Cultura del fare," which is coming to San Marino this week, October 15-19. The project involves the Design degree program at the University of the Republic of San Marino and the Institut Industrial Design HGK FHNW Basel, based in Basel, Switzerland. Six professors, three designers, and thirty students from the two institutions are involved, along with companies from Switzerland and Italy. The 40 hours of activities planned for this week represent the second phase of a program launched last September during a session held in Basel, focusing on unique materials such as natural fibers and fabrics, primarily wool and felt.

The project's goals include improving students' ability to work in multidisciplinary and international teams, offering an educational experience focused on customer relationships, design methodologies, and production contexts. These opportunities are offered by in-depth exploration of topics such as the supply chain and product life cycle, production scenarios, logistics, and sales. The initiative, promoted and funded by the Swiss Embassy in Italy and San Marino, is also supported by the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs, the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture, and the Research Center for International Relations of the University of San Marino.
