The role of women in contemporary Italy, their portrayal in the media, and the family and professional relationships they play, where equality with men still seems far off. These are the starting points of the roundtable discussion that will take place at 17:30 PM on June 9th, as part of the University of the Republic of San Marino's Notte Bianca (White Night). The panel will bring together three figures from academic, artistic, and journalistic backgrounds in the University's Aula Magna to offer diverse and complementary perspectives. Speakers will include Giovanna Cosenza, professor in the Department of Philosophy and Communication at the University of Bologna and director of the Master's Program in Communication and New Media at the University; journalist Federico Taddia, author of the book "Il maschio è inutile" (The Male is Useless); and artist Chiara Rapaccini, a contributor to publications such as Il Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica, and winner of the 2016 Andrea Pazienza Award for Best Web Author.
"We will offer a reflection on gender roles in contemporary society, with a particular focus on the Italian context, where, for example, women earn less than men with the same education," explains Cosenza. "In my contribution, I will discuss, among other things, the representation of men and women in advertising, an area in which I recently joined the Institute of Advertising Self-Discipline," a national body that collects and evaluates reports of potentially offensive, vulgar, or misleading campaigns.
The roundtable discussion, moderated by Carlo Romeo, director of San Marino RTV, is summed up in the title "Mending the World," chosen as the slogan for the 2017 edition of the University of San Marino's Notte Bianca (White Night), which captures women's roles and sensibilities in social, scientific, artistic, and other fields.
Admission is free for all scheduled events. The initiative is sponsored by the Ministries of Education and Culture, Foreign Affairs, Finance and Budget, Industry, Health, Territory, and Tourism.
