What risks do landslides pose to San Marino? And what should be done during the defense design phases, as well as during civil defense? These are some of the questions that will be answered during the seminar "Hydraulic Land Protection," organized by the Civil Engineering Degree Program at the University of the Republic of San Marino. Scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, from 9:00 a.m. in the Montelupo Hall in Domagnano, the event will feature presentations by renowned academics in the field, including Stefano Orlandini and Giovanni Moretti, who will present a study on the Marano River. The two, both professors at the University of San Marino, will be joined by geologist Cristiano Guerra, who will discuss hydrogeological instability phenomena in the San Marino territory, and Fabio Berardi of the San Marino Civil Protection Service, who will focus on risk warning systems.
"The so-called hydrogeological risk is due to the natural characteristics of soils, river systems, and climate, but also to the exposure of our private and industrial activities to the risk of flooding and landslides," explains Orlandini. "Compared to the past, the problem of land hydraulic protection is complicated by the rapid changes in demographics, land use, and climate currently affecting our country. These changes affect, on the one hand, hydrological and geological processes and, on the other, the sensitivity of areas devoted to agriculture and intensive industrialization to landslides."
The event is held in collaboration with the Order of Geologists of the Republic of San Marino, the Order of Engineers and Architects of the Republic of San Marino, the Order of Engineers of Rimini, and the Order of Architects of Rimini. It is also sponsored by the Secretariat of State for Territory and the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture.
