The University of the Republic of San Marino has activated its internal institutional channels to implement its intention to offer scholarships "to Afghan female students who wish to continue their studies but are unable to do so in Afghanistan."
The decision, formalized last week by Rector Corrado Petrocelli, was communicated to a number of San Marino public officials in a letter highlighting the need to avail of, with the essential support of institutions and offices, "humanitarian corridors and visas for female students, so they can reach San Marino safely" and continue their studies in the Republic, within the University of San Marino.
The decision by the University, which recently established an interdepartmental working group to combat violence against women and to promote respect and appreciation of gender differences and identities, stems from the evolving situation in Afghanistan. Despite reassurances and promises of amnesty from Taliban spokespeople, according to the letter signed by the Rector, there is still no certainty that reprisals will not follow the establishment of the Islamic emirate, especially against women, ethnic and religious minorities, and Western collaborators.
