A Civil Engineering research project involving the University of the Republic of San Marino has been selected by the "Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Infrastructure Alliance for Europe" (SERA) to be part of the "Horizon 2020 - Research and Innovation" program ”, funded by the European Commission.
At the heart of the study is a series of tests aimed at investigating the consequences that river floods have on the piers of bridges which are based, in fact, in the bed of watercourses. "Let's start from an observation: collapses are caused more often by these phenomena than by earthquakes, because floods occur every year, therefore more frequently than seismic events", explains Francesca Dezi, professor at the University of San Marino. "The study, through which we will analyze the dynamics that occur in these conditions, is aimed at an advanced design for the new structures, with a consequent increase in safety".
As part of the project, some analyzes are scheduled for the end of May on the Euroseistest site, near Thessaloniki, in Greece, where there is a real-sized structure on which the foreseen studies will be carried out. The research group involves Dezi together with ten colleagues from the Marche Polytechnic University and the English universities of Strathclyde and Surrey.
