The University of San Marino brings studies on 'green' and experimental asphalt used on Titan to an international summit

The eco-sustainable asphalt developed by the University of the Republic of San Marino and applied in some streets of the Titano thanks to the collaboration of the Autonomous State Company for Public Works was the focus of a research presented on Friday 21 May as part of the sixth edition of the International Conference on Road and Rail Infrastructure, an international summit in which dynamics related to infrastructures such as roads and railways were addressed.

During the event, held online due to the pandemic, a study was illustrated that compared San Marino and Poland, where the University of Gdansk tested techniques similar to those used on the Titan in the laboratory: "Specifically - he explains Andrea Grilli, professor of the Civil Engineering degree course at the University of San Marino – both cases concerned the application of the cold recycling technique for bituminous conglomerates for road use. The interest arose on the occasion of the International Summer School on roads and the environment hosted by our reality in 2019, when four Polish researchers visited the experimental sections built in San Marino. Compared to the Titan, Poland still has to face these steps and is completing laboratory studies also following the experiences of San Marino".

The findings that emerged from the analysis presented at the international conference were positive: "A number of advantages derive from cold recycling techniques, compared with traditional ones, including the complete reuse of asphalt from old roads, the elimination of gas released into the air and the reduction of energy consumption”.
