Coordination and management roles in projects and tenders for the degree course in Civil Engineering
There are three Italian administrative realities that have chosen the University of the Republic of San Marino to coordinate, on various levels, road maintenance works using innovative and eco-sustainable techniques.
Among the various initiatives, the Civil Engineering degree course of the University of San Marino was in fact involved by the Municipality of Ravenna in the definition of a call for tenders worth around 16 million Euros over four years for road maintenance in the city: "We have given support to administration to indicate, among other things, the rules and qualitative and management standards to which the company that will be awarded the contract will have to adapt”, explains the teacher Andrea Grilli. “Among the other defined elements, the techniques to be employed”.
The University of San Marino is also involved in the works that are affecting a section of about four kilometers on the SS73bis, which connects Fano to Urbino, managed by ANAS: "We have given support in identifying the methodologies used and in the operations involved - he specifies again Grilli – for a project worth around three million euros which involves the removal of surface asphalt and the restoration of the road using the same demolition materials removed, through a mix of bitumen and cement. This entails a series of advantages for the environment and economic savings. The same material removed is reused without having to use and buy more from natural quarries. Furthermore, no transport is necessary and the treatment is carried out cold on site, thus avoiding unpleasant emissions and without consuming energy for heating".
The Ravenna and SS73bis initiatives are joined by a project through which, from the end of September, the eco-sustainable techniques at the center of San Marino University research will be used in the industrial area and connection with the center of Fano in the framework of a plan four million euros. For the University of San Marino, in this sense, a support role in the design and construction supervision which is added, moreover, to a collaboration already active for several years with the municipal company GEAT (Management of Environmental and the Territory) on behalf of the Municipality of Riccione. Among other things, a series of training internships for students and the support of the degree course in Civil Engineering within the framework of the next road maintenance projects, estimated at around four million Euros in as many years, are envisaged.
Finally, moving on to strictly academic activities, on 8 September Grilli gave a lecture to doctoral students and young researchers as part of the International Summer School on roads and the environment organized in Naples by the Società Italiana Infrastrutture Viarie. The University of San Marino was thus included in a selection of speakers from the Turin Polytechnic, the Marche Polytechnic University and the Federico II University of Naples. In this context, in the young researchers section, Alex Balzi represented the University of San Marino illustrating a study on the management of road maintenance through the use of particular software.
