Provide the essential notions of Geriatric Medicine to white coats who work daily with elderly patients but are not specialists in Geriatrics and Gerontology. This is the objective of the second level Master's Degree in Geriatric Medicine at the University of the Republic of San Marino, which opens pre-registration for its sixth edition until 13 October. An initiative which has so far trained nearly 100 graduates and guarantees, among other things, basic specialist training on pathologies related to aging and their treatment.
“In the last century, all Western countries have witnessed a progressive increase in the elderly population. In Italy there are more than 13 million, and of these more than 2 million are non-self-sufficient, while more than 200 thousand are resident in structures”, explains the scientific director of the Master, Giovanni Zuliani. “The elderly patient has particular characteristics that distinguish him from the adult, such as the atypical presentation of pathologies, decline in functional and cognitive status, clinical instability, reduced mobility and social and economic problems. These characteristics require particular preparation on the part of all the doctors who work with them on a daily basis, both inside and outside the dedicated structures. The need for geriatric training - concludes the academic - is growing exponentially among medical personnel, in the face of an offer that, at the moment, is limited only to specialization schools in Geriatrics. In this sense, a post-graduate professional training in Geriatric Medicine can contribute to a partial adaptation of the professional training of the numerous doctors who work in close contact with elderly patients".
The Master is organized in collaboration with the University of Ferrara. More information on the website www.unirsm.sm, in the "educational offer" section.
