The set for William Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream," performed on June 8th before an audience of over 800 at the Teatro La Fenice in Senigallia by the Theatre Workshop of the Perticari Classical High School, was created by students in the Design degree program at the University of the Republic of San Marino. Over 50 students from the University of San Marino who are attending the "Fundamentals of Design Workshop" contributed, under the guidance of instructor Massimo Brignoni, to the design and construction of a set designed to represent two distinct settings: Athens on one side, and the forest on the other. "These are the main settings of this comedy," explains Brignoni, "where rational and irrational dimensions coexist to create a performance that continually oscillates between the real world and the one constructed by the unconscious. As in a dream, where everything is possible and the context is elusive and indefinable, the set design also takes the form of an anamorphic structure that changes its configuration in space to help emphasize this surreal reality in the performance. We designed a structure capable of creating different 'backdrops' when positioned differently. Initially, it featured a cube shape representing the city, then it was repositioned by the actors, who thus integrated the change of setting into the performance, becoming a triangle to recall the forms of nature."
