Building a classical guitar and a surfboard using new materials, geometries, and manufacturing processes. Identifying a method to give skis a "second life." Approaching visual journalism while overcoming the risk of trivializing information, to draw attention to crucial issues while challenging dominant narratives and consumption patterns.
These are some of the activities at the heart of "San Marino Design Workshop 2017," six days of lectures, exhibitions, and seminars organized by the University of the Republic of San Marino from July 10th to 15th at the Ancient Monastery of Santa Chiara, in the historic center of San Marino. The initiative will involve nearly 200 students, businesses, institutions, and internationally active designers, under the theme "All Around Design — Doing as Thinking."
Specifically, the workshop "Surfboard Design: Style, Materials, and Hydrodynamics" will lead students to create five different models using alternative shapes and non-standard materials, thanks to contributions from, among others, former Italian champion of the discipline, Matteo Fabbri, along with designers Antonio Aguirre and Tommaso Lucinato. Meanwhile, "Design Meets Journalism and Social Sciences," curated by Matteo Moretti, will focus on the relationship between data visualization and motion graphics to understand how they can ensure transparent and balanced information on complex topics.
We'll delve into the world of six-stringed instruments and lutherie with "Designing and Making a Classical Guitar," in which Gianluca Ballarin will guide aspiring designers through the importance of striking the right balance between form and function in an object where this relationship is crucial. Meanwhile, "Strategies with Small Lebanese Cherry Producers," curated by Edoardo Perri and Riccardo Varini, will propose a strategic design project for international cooperation with Lebanon and the cherry producers of the Bekka Valley.
Designer Sara Ferrari, with "Designing a Second Life for Skis," will attempt to imagine a 'new purpose' for this technologically advanced yet difficult-to-recycle object, while Filipe Alarcao, lecturing on "Innovation Born from Direct Experimentation on Materials," will help students understand the technical and expressive potential of cork through practices such as experimenting with new processes and combinations with other materials.
Finally, focusing on the San Marino region, the workshops "Communicating and Sharing Values with the Community" by Claude Marzotto and Maia Sambonet, with an example based on the 40 years of activity of the San Marino cooperative Titancoop, and "The New Visual Identity of the Convention & Visitors Bureau of the Republic of San Marino" by Ilaria Montanari, in which the definition of a logo and the codes of visual communication for a brand will be applied to one of the main conference organizers in the Republic of San Marino.
“San Marino Design Workshop 2017” is organized by the Design degree program at the University of the Republic of San Marino in collaboration with the University of Bologna, the Convention & Visitors Bureau of the Republic of San Marino, Tecnica Group Spa, Amorim & Irmãos, Cooperativa Titancoop San Marino, AssoBDM, Banca Etica, and the NGO Fondazione Giovanni Paolo II.
