Subject
The historical memory of San Marino political life, considered fully, is in jeopardy. A recent survey carried out by the staff of the State Archives on the documentation produced over the decades by San Marino political parties and movements has revealed an overall picture marked by the fragmentation of archival conservation and the lack of a unitary vision that guarantees the effective protection of these materials and their full use, starting from univocal criteria that intervene both in terms of reorganization and inventory and in terms of the digitalization interventions necessary to guarantee their consultation.
Research objectives
The project includes an initial census of the twentieth-century archives of political parties and movements present in the territory of the Republic of San Marino, with the aim of formulating a proposal for the digitization of the material that will prepare its use and wider valorization.
For this preparation, a phase of study of concrete problems, entrusted to researchers of the Gramsci Center, could conclude with a public discussion seminar in San Marino on the central themes of this project.
It is worth highlighting – in this context of the necessary connection between different archives – the opportunity to connect the editorial choices mentioned above with the historical study of the concrete connections between the activity of the political movements of San Marino and that of the Italian and foreign as well as international political movements.
This will have to happen not exclusively within the various "political families", but certainly by privileging relationships from party to corresponding party, for example translated into correspondence and the exchange of information between the major leaders of the respective movements, and in common or parallel political initiatives, planned and implemented.
Third mission objectives
- Analysis of the condition of political archives in San Marino
- Training Seminar: Party Archives from Paper to Digital, December 2, 2022
Status of works
The research is finished. In 2023 the volume “Guide to the archives of political parties and personalities” was published, which constitutes the 7th volume of the series of the Sammarinese Centre for Historical Studies “Tools and documents” by the publisher Bookstones. The Guide presents the cards of thirty Sammarinese archive funds, the texts of the curators, of Andreas Iacarella (Gramscian Studies Centre, University of San Marino), of Damiano Muccioli (San Marino archivist) and Paolo Rondelli (Director of the Cultural Institutes of the Republic of San Marino). The text represents the conclusion reached by the work carried out by the group of scholars involved in the project (reported in the project of which a copy is attached) and which was developed through the census of the archives in question, the organization of a seminar dedicated to the theme "The archives of the parties from paper to digital" (San Marino, 2 December 2022, the audio recordings are available on the platform managed by USMARADIO), the digitization and publication, on the website of the Centro studi gramsciani, of a core of documents selected from those present in the archives of the main Sammarinese parties (A portal for the Sammarinese political archives Gramsci Centre for the Humanities (gramsciforthehumanities.org))
