The research is combined, for geographical reasons, with the peculiar condition of San Marino as an enclave in Italian territory, a condition from which specific and changing relations with Italy derive: geography has always marked the external relations of the Republic. By virtue of the historical period of reference and the interlocutors with whom it came into contact, the research aims to demonstrate the conditions imposed by geography, but also the opportunities that allowed the Republic to "go beyond", contrary to what is indicated by the physical characteristics. Drawing on historiographical sources of San Marino, as well as considering the results of archive research carried out in San Marino (State Archives and Archives of the Department of Foreign Affairs), in Italy (Central State Archives), at the Papal States (Vatican Apostolic Archives), France (Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs), that is, with the countries with which it has intertwined its history, the historical reconstruction will aim to restore the main bilateral events with Italy during the long pre-unification period of Italy. Subsequently, the most significant episodes and specificities of the equally long period of construction of the Italian State will be highlighted, including the events of the Italian Risorgimento and the most important facts of the early years of the Italian Republic. In the beginning of the process of European integration, and in the context of an enriched enclave condition of San Marino, not yet sufficiently investigated in the historical studies available to date, specific initiatives of the Republic in the multilateral and bilateral sphere will finally be considered.
Learning outcomes
Particular research importance will be given to the so-called external dimension of the perpetual freedom of the Republic, with the aim of highlighting the main changes in the actions of the actors involved and illustrating the peculiar political trajectories and events of the country based on historical events and the geographical context that has constantly changed and evolved over time.
Status of works
The research will conclude with the publication of a volume in the “Quaderni” series of the Sammarinese Centre for Historical Studies.
