Subject

The Italian Ministry of Education is proceeding with the experimentation of the four-year extension of secondary school. In concrete terms, the experimentation (already underway in more than 1000 secondary schools and likely to be generalized in all Technical Institutes) consists in introducing four-year high schools and technical institutes in place of the traditional five-year secondary schools, so as to bring young people closer to their European peers. In Europe, in almost all countries (such as Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom) students graduate at 18 instead of 19, gaining a year for university studies or for looking for work. Obviously, this cannot be a "shortcut" to finish school sooner: the institutes participating in the experimentation must ensure that the learning objectives currently envisaged for the fifth year of the course are achieved by the end of the fourth year. The teaching of all subjects envisaged by the course of study must therefore be ensured, accompanied by a strong dialogue with the world of work and universities. There is currently no consolidated framework of research results on this topic.

  • Detect and monitor some of the most accredited experiments in the experimentation of the four-yearly secondary school system in Italy
  • Develop an operational project for possible experimentation for the secondary school of San Marino

Status of works

The research is in the starting phase with the creation of a working group defined together with the Management of the Secondary School and the Education Department.
