The Library of Historical Studies was established with the establishment of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici (Higher School of Historical Studies), founded in 1989, and presided over by illustrious figures in Italian culture: Aldo Schiavone and Luciano Canfora. It holds approximately one hundred thousand volumes and around one hundred subscriptions to historical journals. It includes some particularly valuable sections, including the Ruggiero Romano Collection and recent significant donations from the Alberto Ronchey Collection, the Corrado Vivanti Collection, the Fernand Braudel Collection, the Adriano Prosperi Collection, the Carlo Fusaro Collection, the Ercole Sori Collection, the Silvio Panciera Collection, the Claudio Finzi Collection, the Sergio Borelli Collection, the Nicola Tranfaglia Collection, and the Stefano Zamagni Collection. In addition to these funds, there are volumes donated by institutions, teachers and friends of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici, such as Eric Hobsbawm, Renato Zangheri, Mirella Bartolotti, Vittor Ivo Comparato, Alberto Caracciolo, Pier Paolo Tempesta, the Lelio and Lisli Basso Foundation, the Feltrinelli Foundation, the Vienna Academy of Sciences, the San Marino-Japan Association, Luigi Morganti, Pier Paolo Guardigli, Gianfranco Berardi, Federicomaria Muccioli, Oreste Morganti, Federico Santangelo, Patrizia Dogliani.

Background SERGIO BORELLI
1923-2021 // Born in Milan, he was an Italian journalist and documentary filmmaker. His main interests were the two great revolutions: Soviet socialism and communist China. He was Moscow correspondent for the daily newspaper Il Giorno.

Background FERNAND BRAUDEL
Luméville-en-Ornois-Cluses, 1902-1985 // Historian, professor at the Collège de France, president of the VIème Section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études and director of the Centre de la Recherche Historique, member of the Académie Française. Born in Luméville-en-Ornois (Meuse) and died in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie). One of the most important historians of the twentieth century, his innovative approach to history profoundly influenced contemporary historiography.

The volumes were donated in 2018 by his daughter Françoise Braudel

Background CLAUDIO FINZI
1902-1985 // Professor of History of Political Doctrines at the University of Perugia. Born in Milan.
A prolific author, his studies have focused particularly on political humanism and pre-Machiavellian authors. He has written monographs on Domenico Morosini, Matteo Palmieri, and Giovanni Pontano.

The book collection was donated by the family in 2021.

Background CARLO FUSARO
Basel, 1950- // Italian constitutionalist and politician. He taught at the Universities of Pisa and Florence.
Member and then president of the Guarantor Panel for the Constitutionality of Laws, the Constitutional Court of the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, from 2012 to 2016.

The volumes were donated to the University Library in 2016 by Prof. Carlo Fusaro.

Background SILVIO PANCIERA
Venice-Rome 1933-2016 // Professor of Latin Epigraphy at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Academician of the Lincei.
He was a student of Attilio Degrassi, an illustrious follower of the Mommsenian tradition of studies in Italy; he dedicated the update issue to Attilio Degrassi himself. Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL), VI, pars VIII/2.[1]. He was an Italian epigraphist and historian. Known for his work in the field of Latin epigraphy, he was one of the leading scholars of Roman inscriptions, particularly those of Rome and Lazio. Panciera taught «Epigraphy and Roman Antiquities» at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome until 2006. He was also a pioneer in the use of new technologies for the archiving and dissemination of inscriptions, founding the Epigraphic Database of Capital Initials of Rome (EDR).

Background ERCOLOLE SORI
1943- // Born in Pievebovigliana (MC). Historian, professor of economic history, and member of the scientific committees of the Italian Society of Historical Demography, the Italian Society of Economic Historians, the Deputation for the History of the Marche Region, the Marchigiana Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, the Association of Environmental Economists, the Italian Association of Urban History, the scientific committees of the Emigrant Museum (Republic of San Marino), and the journals "Estudios Migratorios" (at the Galician Cultural Council), "Theomai" (Buenos Aires), and "Registros" (Mar del Plata, Argentina). From 2004 to 2019, he directed the Sammarinese Center for Historical Studies at the University of San Marino.

Background ADRIANO PROSPERI
Italian historian (Cerreto Guidi, Florence, 1939). A student of Delio Cantimori, Hubert Jedin, and Armando Saitta, he held the chair of History of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Advanced School of Historical Studies at the University of San Marino and a professor in the Doctorate in Historical Sciences. He has donated thousands of extracts, journals, and monographs to the History Library since its inception.

The Prosperi Collection expanded in 2021 and constitutes the largest collection in the History Library.

Background CORRADO VIVANTI
Mantua-Turin, 1928-2012 // Italian historian. A student of Delio Cantimori and Fernand Braudel, after completing his university studies in 1962 he began a long collaboration with the Einaudi publishing house, editing its history series; among these is Storia d'Italia (1972-76), a six-volume series co-edited with Ruggiero Romano. From the late 1960s, Vivanti also taught history at the Universities of Perugia and 'La Sapienza' in Rome. He was among the founders of the San Marino School of Historical Studies.

The first part of the Book Collection was donated to the History Library of the University of San Marino when the School was founded in 1989. The second part of the Book Collection was donated by the Vivanti family in 2016.

Background NICOLA TRANFAGLIA
Italian historian and journalist (Naples 1938 – Rome 2021). Professor of Contemporary History (from 1976 to 2006), then Professor Emeritus (from 2007) of European History at the University of Turin.
He was a member of the Italian Parliament (Deputy) from 2006 to 2008. He was a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Studi storici" and "Passato e presente," dedicating his studies primarily to the political and institutional history of twentieth-century Italy. He has directed major works of historical criticism and synthesis: The contemporary world e History: The Great Problems from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age, Utet, 1986.
