LIST OF MATERIALS THAT MAKE UP THE FINAL DISSERTATION

1) PROJECT TABLE

This table presents the project in a comprehensive and concise manner.
The table must be in A2 format (h 42 x b 59,4 cm) and in an horizontal layout.

The table must be submitted three times:

  • in digital format through the Esse3 portal.The deadline for submitting the thesis can be consulted on graduation sessions and deadlines It also requires the supervisor's approval. It will therefore be necessary to upload the final version of the thesis to your degree application well in advance, to allow the supervisor to approve the thesis within the deadline.;
  • in digital format on the server indicated by the coordinator of the thesis laboratory before the discussion of the dissertation. The copy submitted to this server must be the same as the one submitted through Esse3. If a different copy was submitted by mistake, it must be replaced. If the link does not work, please use a different browser.
  • printed and mounted on rigid support (preferably 3mm thick Forex or other sandwich materials) to be displayed in original A2 format on the day of the discussion; it is important that the mounting on the rigid support is done with particularly care, without smudges, glue marks, or inaccurate cuts.

The content of the table must summarise the project in a concise and comprehensive manner.

The board could remain on public display at the university until the next graduation session.

The board must present the content clearly and understandably, even to those who are not design expert. For this reason, the brief accompanying description must describe the type and usage (mobile phone, sports shoe, lamp, exhibition setup, corporate identity, visual identity manual, editorial graphics, signage, or other).

The choice of font and size for captions, notes, and text included in the graphic works is free, but it must be legible when displayed (a print test, even a partial, is recommended to verify readability). The amount of text should be relatively limited, approximately the same lenght as the abstract. Images should be few so that they can be large enough to be seen if the board is hung and displayed. This coincise information will be useful to indicate the type and purpose of the project, leaving out elements such as research, concept, or other details, which should be described analytically in the report.

The Unirsm Design [UD] logo, in its extended single-line version, can be found at pdfhttps://design.unirsm.sm/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/UNIRSM-declinazione-loghi.pdf and must be placed at 13 mm from the bottom edge of the page, and 13 mm from the left margin. The logo must be 72 mm in size with proportional height. Use positive or negative version as needed.

The header of the board should be placed with the baseline of the text at a distance of 13 mm from the bottom edge of the paper, and 13 mm from the right margin, on a single line, in 18pt font (M/m). Text can be in positive or negative as needed. The header should indicate: First Name Surname – University of the Republic of San Marino – Degree Course in Design – academic year xxxx-xxxx

The table must have appropriate quality and visibility. Imagine that, from an overall view, your project should be easily understood through just a few images and a few lines of text.

2) PROJECT REPORT

The report must be submitted three times:

  • in digital format through the Esse3 portal.The deadline for submitting the thesis can be consulted on graduation sessions and deadlines It also requires the supervisor's approval. Therefore, it will be necessary to upload the final version of the thesis to your degree application well in advance, to allow the supervisor to approve the thesis within the deadline.;
  • in digital format on the server indicated by the coordinator of the thesis laboratory before the discussion of the dissertation. The copy submitted to this server must be the same as the one submitted through Esse3. If a different copy was submitted by mistake, it must be replaced. If the link does not work, please use a different browser.
  • in paper format on the day of the thesis discussion.

It must be laid out using a graphic design created by the candidate, in A5, A4 or intermediate formats.

The report must present the entire process of the project, organized and structured in a comprehensible manner through a detailed index, using text, images, diagrams, and charts to illustrate the main phases of the design process (mapping, analysis, and research; concept and final project; executive project).

The drawings will be accompanied by captions, notes and any text, they must include dimensions and the scale must be clearly indicated in the technical drawings.

There is no minimum requirement for the number of pages or the amount of text. Candidates are expected to use common sense, bearing in mind that the report is the primary tool for evaluating the project and is intended to serve as a document for possible future consultation. A report that is too brief or lacks a bibliography will not be considered.

The bibliography and webography may contain references to documents consulted specifically for the thesis project, but also to texts that have accompanied the candidate's individual design process.

The bibliographic index could be organized following this example:

Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point: The Big Effects of Small Changes (Title in Italics), Bur, Milan 2006.

The order may be chronological or alphabetical at the candidate's choice.

3) ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS

The abstract must be submitted three times:

  • in digital format through the Esse3 portal.The deadline for submitting the thesis can be consulted on graduation sessions and deadlines It also requires the supervisor's approval. Therefore, it will be necessary to upload the final version of the thesis to your degree application well in advance, to allow the supervisor to approve the thesis within the deadline.;
  • in digital format on the server indicated by the coordinator of the thesis laboratory before the discussion of the dissertation. The copy submitted to this server must be the same as the one submitted through Esse3. If a different copy was submitted by mistake, it must be replaced. If the link does not work, please use a different browser.
  • in paper format the day of the thesis discussion inserted and integrated among the initial pages of the thesis.

The abstract is generally between 250 and 500 words.

4) IMAGES OF THE THESIS

The thesis images must be submitted twice:

  • in digital format through the Esse3 portal. in .zip format so that they can be considered as a single attachment. The thesis submission deadline can be consulted on graduation sessions and deadlines It also requires the supervisor's approval. Therefore, it will be necessary to upload the final version of the thesis to your degree application well in advance, to allow the supervisor to approve the thesis within the deadline.;
  • in digital format on the server indicated by the coordinator of the thesis laboratory before the discussion of the dissertation. The copy submitted to this server must be the same as the one submitted through Esse3. If a different copy was submitted by mistake, it must be replaced. If the link does not work, please use a different browser.

You are required to submit 3 to 6 images of the model and/or details in A5 format, saved at 150 dpi in TIFF format. This submission is required in case of participation in competitions, publications, and other method of divulgation.

5) PROTOTYPES AND MODELS

Prototypes or study models for product design and visual communication projects must be created throughout the design process, that is, during all phases.

They are necessary to discuss the project during meetings with the supervisors.

Prototypes or final models of product design and visual communication projects must be created on a significant scale, executed with any technique and must be suitable to best display and help understand the project.

No early submission is required, prototypes or models will be displayed during the thesis presentation.

6) OTHER

In digital formaton the serverwhich will be indicated by the coordinator of the degree laboratory before the thesis discussion, the following must be uploaded by the day before the thesis presentation:

– any videos

– the presentation slides

other: fonts, visual accessibility, interactivity

Final remarks on the discussion

Failure to deliver the documentation precludes the possibility of discussing the thesis.

The final version of the thesis must be approved (by the deadline for submitting the final thesis) by the first supervisor, who will receive an automatic notification from Esse3 upon upload. It is therefore necessary to upload the file to your degree application well in advance.

By the time of the thesis discussion, you must have with you:

- n. 2 printed copies of the project report prepared according to the guidelines;

- the project board in A2 format (h 42 x w 59,4 cm) printed and mounted on a rigid support (preferably 3 mm thick Forex or other sandwich materials) to be displayed in its original A2 format on the day of the discussion; it is important that the mounting on the rigid support is done with great care, without smudges, glue marks or imprecise cuts;

- the slides to be projected;

- any prototypes or models.

It is your responsibility to set up on the committee's table the A2 project, the report, the declaration of consultation, and to verify the proper functioning (and compatibility) of all audio/video hardware and software for the presentation..

The schedule for the presentation of the thesis will be defined in detail after the students have submitted their materials and will be published on graduation sessions and deadlines.

Normally, alphabetical order is followed.
