TACTUS Radio Festival
The first edition of TACTUS Radio Festival took place in the great hall of the Ancient Santa Chiara Monastery of the University of San Marino from 1 to 3 December 2023, offering a series of meetings and debates with protagonists of the Italian national and international radio scene . The festival presented performances, debates, narratives, podcasts and a concert broadcast live on twelve radio stations around the world and then relaunched in the following weeks by the entire network of broadcasters belonging to Radia.fm, which Usmaradio has been a member of since 2017. Among the participants in the three days, prominent figures from Radio Rai, Radio24, Ravenna Festival and the Bauhaus University of Weimar.
During the final day of the festival, the participants, many of whom belong to the CRIR scientific committee, shared their experiences, reflections and possible educational proposals related to the world of radio. The radio and collaborative performance CONTINUUM aired live on 12 radio stations around the world via AM/FM, web and satellite broadcast technology.
The biennial festival plans a second edition in the winter of 2025.
The Radiophonic Artistic Residences
The artistic residencies allow artists and researchers to concentrate on the conception, creation and development of a new work dedicated to the world of radio in well-equipped and highly contaminating places: spaces, relationships and time are the essential ingredients of support for creation. Since the fifties of the last century, the radio and electronic music studios of the national radios have created opportunities for meeting, collaboration and experimentation: through today's technologies and thoughts, the Radio Residenze reaffirm the crucial importance of these physical spaces that have worked a lot on the relationship between sound experimentation and radio broadcasting. The Radio Residenze are a suitable moment for the flowering of new artistic works, and welcome the germination of study and research activities dedicated to radio broadcasting.
- Who can participate
The Radio Residencies are open to individual artists and researchers of any geographical origin. They encourage the participation of anyone interested in curiously investigating the world of radio and its relationship with the performing and visual arts through projects or study activities. The Radio Residenze are safe and inclusive spaces.
- Selection Criteria
In the hope of being able to welcome the largest number of projects within our capabilities, priority will be given to works close to the themes of inclusion and diversity. Applications will be evaluated by the Usmaradio team based on the feasibility of the project and its objectives.
- Where
The Radio Residenze are spread over two locations: the studio in Giardini Pensili, in a wood on the hills of Rimini a few minutes from the sea, and Usmaradio's studios on Monte Titano at the University of the Republic of San Marino inside the Ancient Monastery of Santa Chiara (1608). Located between the sea, hills and mountains, they are spaces outside the city and experiential, rural and technologically equipped places in a cozy context connected to the world.
The Radio Residenze do not welcome groups but one artist/researcher at a time, who can stay in a single room in the studio in Giardini Pensili.
- proposing subjects
Radio Residenze is a project by Usmaradio co-produced with Giardini Pensili and Transcultures, in collaboration with a network of partners in Italy and abroad.
School of Radio - The School of Radio
The School of Radiophony is an itinerant school, a branched project made up of workshops, work sessions, meetings and live performance presentations.
A school conceived as a meeting place between radio theory and practice: Radio Art, Sound Art, new radio play, web radio, radio and telematics, network projects, relationship with text, soundscape, software and hardware, live radio and live media.
“Online, on-air, on-site” is the key to media relations and those that are formed around the practice of widespread and adventurous radio.
Again, a school as continuous training of artists, technicians and scholars; a space that responds to the absence – so far – of training places on the radio broadcasting scene.
SoR (The School of Radio) is a hub, it takes shape as a place of study and production and at the same time it is also the device for the occurrence of occasions, sometimes even imagined by its designers. SoR connects directly to the working method of producers such as Heidi Grundmann (ORF Kunstradio) and Pinotto Fava (RAI Audiobox), a method which favors the genesis of open and mutant works – think of complex projects such as HorizontalRadio – which often went beyond the artists' intentions. Therefore, SoR has no curators and instead sees the presence of figures (designer) grappling with the construction, from time to time, of different devices; the latter linked to the context in which the stages of the work path take place.
The encounter between radio and the web is inevitably one of the cornerstones of the project. The rapid technological innovation, which has led to a progressive portability (and even pocketability) of the radio, has however not generated either an adequate theoretical reflection on the technical possibilities acquired or a constant presence of the related practices, both at the daily micro-scale level -subjective, both of the macro institutional system of the radio and the network.
SoR works on these shortcomings with the desire to attract professionals and intervene, with full knowledge of the facts, within a scene that is sometimes lacking in memory, history and critical instrumentation. Despite the large number (and variety) of so-called cyber projects that have spread since the early XNUMXs by artists, technicians, radio (institutional and otherwise), very little of this research has become part of our daily life. Faced with the risk of oblivion, SoR sets out to look and rethink the recent past. Far from nostalgic drifts, promoting this reflection is indeed a viaticum, a way to venture into the present with a backpack containing the necessary tools.
The Radio School was started by Andrea Borgnino, Pinotto Fava, Heidi Grundmann, Gabriele Frasca, Roberto Paci Dalò, Elisabeth Zimmermann. It is promoted by Hanging Gardens, ORF Kunstradio and Usmaradio.
KIN Santarcangelo Festival
Radio Network
The Radia Network emerged from a series of meetings, clandestine events, late night club discussions and a lot of email exchanges between cultural radio producers across Europe. It is producing radio stuff that is hard to describe. Some of it can be labeled radio art, or experimental radio, or creative radio. Sometimes it talks, sometimes it doesn't. It can be noisy, or a kind of soundscape, or a documentary, a document, a talk, a performance. Each and every week, one of the partners will provide the network program, commissioned and produced especially for this purpose: being broadcast by all the partners and made available online.
